今回だけでなく、いつも私と私の家族そして生徒たちを想って下さり、ご支援して頂き、立木茂 先輩と小高寛子先生に心から御礼申し上げます。
今から31年前、私が高校生だった頃に大学の空手道部へ出稽古した際に立木先輩に初めてお会いし、その時から私に胸を貸してくれて、国際大会等の大事な大会を控えている時期には私の道場に来て下さり組手の相手をしてくれました。私だけでなく私の家族と生徒たちのことも大切にしてくれて、大会会場や合宿場に沢山の飲料水やゼリーなどを手に持ち直接届けに来てくれる真に心の優しい兄のような存在なのです。
今から18年前、私の生徒が「世界で活躍出来る選手になりたい」という目標を掲げ、私は実現に向け協力したく世界最高峰の国際大会へ遠征することを決めました。私はハワイ在住の寛子先生へ電話し、毎年11月に主催されている『オールハワイ州空手道選手権大会 ホノルル国際空手道選手権大会』に出場させて欲しい旨を伝えました。まだ一度も会ったことがない私に対し寛子先生は優しく親切に対応して下さり、私と生徒共に出場することが出来るようになりました。大会前日のセミナーや大会当日の会場でも寛子先生をはじめ小高忠三先生、ご息女のMariさん、ご子息のGeorgeさんも私たちを温かく迎えて下さり、真剣且つ楽しく様々なことを経験することが出来ました。私は今でも忘れない言葉があります。私が先生方に「どうしてそこまで親切にして下さるのですか？」と尋ねると寛子先生は「私たちはあなた方のような町道場で頑張っている若者たちを応援したいだけです。私たちもハワイに来たばかりの頃は誰も知らず、何も分からないことだらけでした。続けていたら、一人また一人と手を差し伸べてくれる人々が現れました。その方たちがしてくれたことを忘れず、して頂いたことを今は私たちがしているだけなんです。」と優しい笑顔で話してくれました。
私も立木先輩と寛子先生にして頂いたことは決して忘れません。生徒たちのことも、自分自身のことも熟考し成長を成すため、そして武道を通じてより良い世界にして行ける道を探求し続け、実現するために尽力して参ります。
Yesterday, I held the “Wado-ryu Karate-do 3rd Kanagawa Prefecture Tournament Wado-ryu Seibu Team Victory Celebration Party,” and I was able to bring “smiles” to the children’s faces.
Not only this time, but always, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Shigeru Tsuiki Senpai and Sensei Hiroko Kotaka for their thoughtfulness and support for me, my family, and my students.
31 years ago, when I was a high school student, I first met Tsuiki Senpai when I visited the university’s karate club for training. From that time on, he sparred with me, and when I had important tournaments such as international competitions coming up, he would come to my dojo and spar with me. He cares not only for me but also for my family and students, and he is truly a kind-hearted older brother figure who personally delivers lots of drinks and jelly to tournament venues and training camps.
18 years ago, one of my students set the goal of “becoming a world-class athlete,” and I decided to support him in achieving that goal by traveling to the world’s top international tournament. I called Hiroko Sensei, who lives in Hawaii, and asked if I could participate in the “All Hawaii State Karate Championships Honolulu International Karate Championships,” which she hosts every November. Hiroko Sensei, despite never having met me before, was incredibly kind and helpful, and both my student and I were able to participate. At the seminar the day before the tournament and at the tournament venue on the day itself, Hiroko Sensei, along with Chuzo Kotaka Sensei, his daughter Mari Sensei, and his son George Sensei, warmly welcomed us, allowing us to experience many things in a serious yet enjoyable way. There’s a phrase I’ll never forget. When I asked Hiroko Sensei, “Why are you all so kind to us?”, Hiroko Sensei replied with a gentle smile, “We simply want to support young people like you who are working hard in local dojos. When we first came to Hawaii, we didn’t know anyone and were completely clueless. But as we continued, one person after another extended a helping hand. We haven’t forgotten what they did for us, and now we’re simply doing what they did for us.”
I will never forget what Tsuiki Senpai and Hiroko Sensei did for me. I will continue to think carefully about my students and myself, strive to grow, and dedicate myself to exploring and realizing ways to make the world a better place through Budo.
